"My Demon" – A Korean Netflix Series

My Demon is a 16-episode Korean Netflix series produced in 2023. It blends multiple genres, including romantic comedy, drama, and fantasy, much like Netflix’s Love to Hate You. The lead roles are played by Kim Yoo-Jung, known from Netflix's 20th Century Girl, as Do Do-Hee, and Song Kang, recognized from Love Alarm and Forecasting Love and Weather, as Jeong Gu-Won.

What Is "My Demon" About?

Jeong Gu-Won is a demon, a supreme being who has spent 200 years forging pacts with desperate humans.

Do Do-Hee is a brilliant young woman, the heir to a chaebol (a large conglomerate in Korea). Orphaned at the age of 11, she is adopted by Ju Cheon-Suk, a powerful businesswoman who built an empire.

Do Do-Hee is arrogant, haughty, and cold, earning her the nickname “The Devil Wears Hermès” among employees and acquaintances.

One day, Do Do-Hee is forced to attend an arranged marriage meeting set up by Ju Cheon-Suk. However, after a mix-up that leads her to the wrong restaurant, she meets Jeong Gu-Won. Jeong Gu-Won, having reserved the entire restaurant to enjoy a cake, ends up having an awkward yet intriguing conversation with her. They part ways with mixed feelings, believing they’ll never meet again. But fate intervenes as a series of intriguing events causes Jeong Gu-Won to lose his demonic powers, which transfer to Do Do-Hee.

How did this happen? Who is threatening Do Do-Hee, and what will become of Jeong Gu-Won without his powers?

A New Take on a Classic Myth

My Demon is a unique K-drama. The classic myth of the devil making deals in exchange for human souls has been told before, such as in the film Bedazzled, starring Liz Hurley and Brendan Fraser. However, this story shifts the focus to the demon’s perspective. Unlike Harold Ramis’ comedic approach, where the devil schemes to trick humans, My Demon delves into the mythology of temptation and the allure of luxury, exploring what drives humans to lose their souls. This gives the series a compelling and thoughtful edge.

Where Does the Story Take Us?

The series explores how an encounter between two vastly different yet similar beings leads to an unexpected and eventful destiny.

It highlights how interactions between individuals can drive change and personal growth. The relationship between the two protagonists gradually evolves, showing how emotions can develop and transform their souls.

My Demon seamlessly combines genres: fantasy, humor with sharp and direct dialogue, romance through the growing relationship between the leads, and thriller elements driven by a secondary mystery—who wants to kill the heroine, and what is the connection between her parents’ deaths and Ju Cheon-Suk?

My Demon: Romance and Mystery

This story is masterfully told. Flashbacks transport viewers to ancient times, reminiscent of films like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon or House of Flying Daggers. The cast is well-suited to their roles, bringing a cohesive and captivating energy to the series. Their chemistry will leave viewers eager to see how the story unfolds over the episodes.

Happy watching!
