ACTORS AND CHARACTERS

The cast of When the Phone Rings is undeniably one of the drama’s strongest assets. The story primarily focuses on the main couple, who carry the production brilliantly. However, the secondary roles are equally excellent, with solid and well-developed backstories. These add depth, making this drama a true masterpiece.

Let’s begin with the lead actors:

When the Phone Rings, Korean drama

Yoo Yeon Seok: Since the drama’s release, he has been hailed as a rising star in Korean entertainment. However, this actor already boasts an impressive resume, having appeared in K-dramas such as The Interest of Love, Hospital Playlist, and Mr. Sunshine. These titles alone highlight his experience and talent. Already remarkable in these productions, he is once again outstanding here, adding unexpected depth to the story. A standout performance that steals the show.

It would be impossible to mention all the secondary characters, but the production deserves praise for the richness and depth of their stories, which are carefully crafted. Each actor embodies their role flawlessly, adding emotional weight and authenticity to the drama.

OUR IMPRESSIONS

As you’ve probably guessed, we, like most viewers, were thoroughly captivated by this series. It’s gripping, making it hard to stop after each episode. Here are its highlights:

Between suspense, mystery, and psychological drama, this series explores the complex bonds between characters through an unpredictable sequence of events. While it’s a thriller with a political angle, it also stands out as one of the most beautiful love stories in Korean dramas of 2024.

The plot keeps viewers on the edge of their seats until the very last moment. The phone, which seems to hold the power to change lives, becomes the centerpiece of a dangerous game where every decision has unpredictable consequences.

The Storyline: Let’s be honest, it’s one of those stories worthy of Korean dramas. It’s intricately designed, with no loose ends or superficial villains. Everything is connected, attention is paid to detail, and the plot is masterfully executed. The cinematography is stunning, and the overall execution is top-notch, featuring an OST perfectly in tune with the narrative. In fact, we’re treated to Yoo Yeon Seok singing the ending OST “Say My Name,” and he nails it.

The Romance: Everyone will say it, and in fact, the drama has already won four awards at the MBC Drama Awards, including Best Couple. The chemistry is undeniable, captivating all hearts, and most importantly, it feels genuine. Every emotion is conveyed flawlessly, resonating deeply with viewers. These two actors have found the perfect rhythm and harmony for their on-screen couple, making their love story utterly believable and compelling.

Despite its strengths, there are two minor flaws that prevent the series from being absolute perfection:
First, a small regret concerning the secondary couple—they deserved more development.
Second, the 12th episode… Universally disliked and widely questioned, we must agree with most opinions: What happened? It feels entirely out of sync with the previous 11 episodes, swinging between implausibility and over-sentimentality. It’s unclear whether the same team worked on this episode. While we understand the disappointment of many fans, don’t let it deter you from watching this gem.

Despite these small drawbacks, the drama succeeds in captivating viewers with its unique atmosphere and deep themes. It has already won numerous awards, including Best Couple and Best Actor for Yoo Yeon Seok, as well as recognition for its exceptional production design and cinematography. And we suspect this is just the beginning.

When the Phone Rings is a drama that truly deserves its success. With its captivating storyline, complex characters, and meticulous writing, it offers an unforgettable experience for fans of dramatic and romantic series. If you’re looking for an intense and emotional story, this drama is for you. Once you start, you won’t be able to stop. So, will you dare to pick up the phone when it rings?
