Dragons: DreamWorks' Beloved Saga Returns in a Live-Action Adaptation
Dragons, one of DreamWorks’ greatest successes, is set to return to the big screen in 2025. This time, the story of Vikings and their “domesticated companions” will be adapted into a live-action film. A surprising decision seemingly inspired by Disney's live-action remake trend.
For years, Disney has been reviving its animated classics with varying levels of success. Some live-action adaptations take creative risks, but many follow a straightforward copy-paste formula.
1. Keeping the Winning Team: Dean DeBlois Returns
The director of the original trilogy, Dean DeBlois, is back to helm the live-action version. He recently revealed his determination to ensure that the film lives up to the original animated films. The French release date is set for Wednesday, June 11, 2025, while the US release will follow on Friday, June 13, 2025.
Fans have closely analyzed the first teaser of Dragons. So far, it appears to closely resemble the animated original. However, Dean stated on Instagram in November 2024 that they are not planning to recreate every frame of the original. Instead, they aim to pay homage while enriching the backdrop of Hiccup and Toothless’ adventures.
2. A Casting Not Entirely True to the Originals?
Here is the cast of the live-action film:
- Hiccup: Mason Thames
- Astrid: Nico Parker
- Fishlegs: Julian Dennison
- Snotlout: Gabriel Howell
- Ruffnut: Bronwyn James
- Tuffnut: Harry Trevaldwyn
- Gobber: Nick Frost
Movie enthusiasts might recognize some of these names. For instance, Nick Frost, famous for his collaborations with Simon Pegg in comedic hits like *Paul*, joins the cast. Nico Parker, daughter of Thandie Newton, also stars, known for her roles in *Dumbo* and *The Last of Us* pilot on Prime Video.
Gerard Butler reprises his role as Hiccup’s father, Stoick. In the animated films, he lent his voice to the character and now brings him to life on screen.
If you’re a Viking fan, the live-action *Dragons* movie, along with series like *Vikings* on Netflix and its spin-offs, offers plenty of inspiration. Looking to extend your passion for Norse warriors? You can even craft a custom Viking jewelry piece!
