Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s the new teaser for Superman! After unveiling the official poster, DC Studios finally shares the first images of its latest project. Scheduled for release on July 9, 2025, the teaser promises a heroic film filled with hope and a distinctly comic book-inspired aesthetic.
Superman Puts on His Cape (Again)
The ultimate superhero makes his return. A symbol of hope for decades, Superman reappears at the end of this year, offering a perfect gift for fans of the son of Krypton.
After numerous delays and a complete overhaul of DC’s projects, James Gunn, co-chairman of DC Studios, will premiere the new Superman film on July 9. Positioned as the inaugural entry in DC's revamped universe, the teaser reveals a fresh take on Superman and a noticeably less dark atmosphere (literally!) compared to Snyder’s version. Despite its modern approach, the film carries a nostalgic tone.
Released on Thursday, December 19, the teaser, already amassing over 33 million views, introduces a younger Superman. In the opening seconds, we see the son of Krypton weakened, gravely injured, and bleeding, lying on a snowy ground. This stark contrast between the white snow and the iconic blue and red suit sets the tone: this is a more human and vulnerable Superman.
With the unforgettable John Williams score played on an electric guitar and James Gunn’s name appearing in light blue against a starry backdrop, the teaser subtly nods to Christopher Reeve’s Superman, which defined generations. The brighter, more vibrant costume—complete with the signature red trunks—also reinforces the return to the character’s colorful origins.
This Superman is at the dawn of his full powers but faces significant challenges. The teaser highlights the division he sparks: while he inspires hope for many, he also faces skepticism and hostility. A young boy in danger clutches a flag bearing Superman’s symbol, repeatedly calling out "Superman" as chaos erupts around him, symbolizing the hero’s embodiment of hope. In contrast, another scene shows Superman being booed by a crowd, with someone even throwing trash at him.
While the teaser, barely two and a half minutes long, features many striking visuals, it also reveals a few other familiar faces from the DC Universe.
Lex Luthor, Hawkgirl, Green Lantern: A Star-Studded Teaser
Despite its brevity, the teaser offers some surprises. Early on, fans catch a glimpse of a character well-known in the comics but rarely seen in adaptations: Krypto. The Man of Steel’s loyal canine companion appears as both an incredible ally and a reflection of Superman’s humanity. Known for his love of animals, director James Gunn seems eager to explore this underdeveloped dynamic between Superman and his dog, Krypto.
Of course, no Superman story is complete without Lois Lane. The fearless and tenacious journalist of the Daily Planet appears to share a close bond with both Clark Kent and his superhero alter ego. She stands by Superman during his moments of doubt, offering unwavering support amid an imminent extraterrestrial threat.
Other recognizable allies and characters from the comics make appearances as well. The teaser briefly showcases Hawkgirl, a winged superheroine; Guy Gardner, one of the Green Lanterns; and Mister Terrific, known for his genius intellect. Naturally, no Superman story would be complete without his archenemy: Lex Luthor. Played by Nicolas Hoult (Beast from X-Men), this version of Lex Luthor is as envious and spiteful as ever, ready to challenge the hero in red.
While promising, the teaser feels somewhat disjointed, revealing little about the film’s overall stakes. This suspense is likely intentional, keeping audiences eager and on edge until July 9, when the hope for a brighter future for DC Studios may finally materialize.
