As the expansive world of *Les 5 Terres* grows with each volume, so do the tensions. In the thirteenth installment, *Rester Vivants*, the long-anticipated conflict between Angleon and Arnor finally erupts. This marks the beginning of the third cycle, pitting the most powerful nations of the *5 Terres* against each other in a battle for supremacy.

*Les 5 Terres* in the Land of Bears

The latest volume shifts the spotlight to the third realm. After exploring the domains of felines and primates, the new cycle focuses on the bears, created by writers Andoryss, André Chauvel, and Wong. Readers had a glimpse of the bears’ culture and reputation in *Demeus Lor*. Known for their brutality, authority, and near-invincibility, these warriors are central to the looming war with Angleon.

From the outset, the stakes are high as preparations begin for a seaborne invasion of a strategic city, led by Captain Drun. He is supported by an elite force called the Pointe, comprising six bears, a dog, and a wolf, serving under King Rinzem. While Rinzem’s eldest son, Khalden, accompanies him, his daughter Harin and younger son Genkin are left to maintain control over the clan.

This is no easy task. Genkin, one of the princes raised at Angleon’s court as a political hostage, struggles with loyalty. Meanwhile, the unity of Arnor is fragile, as their clans include wolves and dogs alongside the bears.

*Rester Vivants* builds on the strengths of the series. The vast array of characters keeps the pace brisk, offering varied perspectives on this complex world. From Monka, a young bear eager for his first battle, to the seasoned soldier Tenrir, who knows the bloody toll of war, the narrative spans generations and experiences. Character portraits on the inside cover help readers navigate the sprawling cast, though some biographical details could enhance clarity.

Themes of family conflict recur, as seen in Harin’s adherence to tradition versus Genkin’s critique of outdated practices. Though *Les 5 Terres* occasionally evokes heroic fantasy, it lacks magic, and religion plays a minor role. The artwork remains exceptional. Jérôme Lereculey’s detailed illustrations capture both the expressive nuances of the animal characters and the meticulously crafted landscapes. From grand naval fleets to intricately organized battle scenes, the visuals balance refinement and violence, with blood flowing freely in the action sequences.

A Nordic Turn for the Third Cycle

This new installment adopts a more focused narrative structure, centering on two key settings: the Arnor fleet’s assault and the clan dynamics following the warriors’ departure. Unlike previous volumes that explored multiple factions, this chapter delves solely into the bears’ perspective. It introduces a darker tone, highlighting the bears’ savage and ruthless nature.

The bear society draws heavily from Viking culture. This third cycle incorporates new historical references, evident in Lereculey’s art. Nordic patterns adorn women’s clothing, and their ships resemble drakkars. These influences extend to their societal structure: Arnor’s clans are often rivals, with leadership based on strength rather than lineage. Women fight alongside men as equals. This Viking inspiration enriches the series, delving into naval sieges and clan warfare.

Other historical parallels surface. The soldiers’ uniforms echo late Roman legionnaires, and a tracker’s role recalls barbarian auxiliaries in ancient armies. This volume offers a detailed depiction of a siege, from a surprise landing to capturing the outskirts, only to face resistance at the fortified city walls. Various strategies for breaching or defending the city unfold, emphasizing the need for discipline to prevent looting and chaos.

Published by Delcourt, the shared universe of *Les 5 Terres* continues to expand with each cycle. This volume introduces the complex social order of Arnor while shifting to a more brutal and cunning tone. *Rester Vivants* marks a turning point, where meticulous planning meets unexpected challenges. Is the bears’ strength truly unstoppable?
